GLODecathlon is introducing a program where they’ll repurchase or fix customers’ old sports equipment in exchange for store credit, giving these items a chance at a second life. This expansion targets the surplus of sports gear cluttering up households in the UK, estimated to exceed 100 million items. Originally launched for Decathlon’s own-brand bicycles with support from Olympic athletes, Jason and Laura Kenny, the scheme is now broadening to encompass various sports categories like fitness equipment, racket sports, water sports gear, and camping equipment.
The process is designed to be straightforward: customers fill out a brief online assessment, receive a quote for their eligible product, and then drop it off at the nearest Decathlon store for credit worth up to 40 percent of its value. This credit can be used towards purchasing new gear. Decathlon will refurbish and resell the returned products, contributing to a more sustainable cycle.
Additionally, customers can have their sports kits repaired at any Decathlon store using genuine parts from their extensive inventory. Research indicates that nearly a third of UK households store unused sports equipment, with popular items including bicycles, weights, gym equipment, footballs, tennis rackets, and golf clubs.
This initiative aligns with Decathlon’s commitment to sustainability and forms part of their broader efforts to create a circular economy for their products. It follows the launch of their Rentals initiative, enabling customers to rent sports gear affordably. The expansion of the BuyBack scheme comes amid a busy summer of sports events, with many people feeling inspired to try new sports. Decathlon’s initiative provides an affordable way for customers to explore different sports while contributing to a more sustainable approach to sporting goods.
Chris Allen, Sustainability Leader at Decathlon UK, emphasizes the company’s commitment to promoting sports participation in a sustainable manner. Through this circularity initiative, Decathlon aims to prolong the lifespan of sports equipment, estimating that hundreds of thousands of products will be repurchased, resold, or revived through the program.
