Carnival Cruise Line is increasingly employing facial biometric technology to speed up the debarkation process for over 3 million guests. This technology, developed in collaboration with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is being utilized in nine out of Carnival’s 14 US homeports, including Miami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, Jacksonville, New York, Baltimore, Mobile, Galveston, and Long Beach.
The implementation of facial biometrics has resulted in a remarkable 30% average reduction in the time taken for the debarkation process at these homeports. Carnival Cruise Line’s president, Christine Duffy, expressed her appreciation for the partnership with CBP, emphasizing that these innovative solutions enhance efficiency while ensuring the safety and security of guests’ information.
The debarkation process is straightforward: as guests conclude their closed loop cruise and disembark from the ships, they briefly pause at a kiosk equipped with a camera to have their photo taken. Within seconds, the system compares this biometric image to the one on their passport or visa, achieving an accuracy rate of over 98% in verifying the guest’s identity. For US travelers and certain foreign nationals who prefer not to use the facial biometric process, they can request a manual document check from a CBP Officer, adhering to the existing US admission regulations.
