7-Eleven Japan is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for product design and development. The convenience store chain aims to streamline processes by creating a cloud-based IT system that conducts data-driven analysis to generate new product ideas.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, this system will utilize generative AI solutions from OpenAI, Stability AI, and Google to generate ideas based on text and image analysis of data from store sales, consumer feedback, social media, and product manufacturing processes. The system is scheduled to be operational by the spring of the next year.

The company anticipates a 90% reduction in product planning processes, resulting in improved alignment with distribution, customer needs, and emerging trends.

At present, nearly 1,000 Seven-Eleven managerial-level employees are actively using this tool. The company plans to extend the system to staff members involved in product development and marketing by the spring of 2024.

Seven & i Holdings, the holding group, currently offers around 3,400 products in the market under the Seven Premium brand. The introduction of this new AI solution is expected to expedite the expansion of the product lineup by swiftly analyzing customer and store data.
