Earlier this week, HBX Group, a global leader in the TravelTech sector, released its Sustainability Report. The report outlines the initiatives undertaken so far and the key elements of its ESG strategy for the next three years, emphasizing the tourism industry’s potential for positive impact.

With a workforce of over 3,700 employees operating in more than 170 countries, HBX Group has developed a plan comprising over 75 actions aimed at meeting various ESG commitments. A double materiality analysis was conducted, involving stakeholder consultations to ensure the plan aligns with their expectations.

The company has also introduced a new reporting framework that aligns with multiple current regulations and certifications. Recently, HBX Group joined the United Nations Global Compact, which promotes sustainable and socially responsible policies based on 10 guiding principles.

HBX Group has initiated a three-year plan to align its reporting with the new European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which examines the impact of the company and its entire value chain. This plan is supported by the identification of over 4,000 key performance indicators, facilitating tangible changes in environmental protection.

Collaboration in the Tourism Industry

To enhance collaboration with partners and clients, HBX Group has launched the Sustainable Hotels Programme. This program highlights environmentally, socially, and community-respectful hotels and includes over 40,000 properties with official sustainability certifications. Through awareness-raising efforts with various partners, the number of hotels adopting no-single-use plastics policies has increased from 500 to 5,000 in just one year.

Elena Pérez, HBX Group Chief Human Resources & ESG Officer, stated, “We aim to leverage our leadership in tourism technology to foster sustainable growth and contribute to real, positive change. Our action plan includes training and promotion initiatives, adopting more ambitious certifications and reports, and strategic partnerships with our associates. Only through an efficient and collaborative plan can we ensure the travel industry increasingly benefits society.”

The Human Factor as a Driving Force for Initiatives

HBX Group’s employees are a vital asset. The Think Big corporate volunteering program empowers rural communities by developing sustainable micro-destinations, promoting economic growth while protecting natural and cultural resources. The pilot project, launched in Quintana Roo, Mexico, in early 2024, collaborates with the “Caminos Sagrados” area. Over two weeks, 10 employees worked with Mayan cooperatives to enhance their tourism products, increase digitalization, and apply sustainability criteria.

The Sustainability Report also highlights the growing commitment of HBX Group’s employees, who have increased their volunteer hours by 40% compared to the previous year. Their efforts have been crucial in reforestation projects, resulting in the planting of over 12,000 trees in Mallorca, Brazil, and Thailand up to 2023. These initiatives have contributed to HBX Group being certified as Carbon Neutral for six years in Scopes 1 and 2 by Carbon Footprint LTD.
