JetBlueJetBlue Airways is discontinuing several unprofitable routes within the United States and abroad, as part of its cost-cutting measures following the blockage of its $3.8 billion bid for Spirit Airlines earlier this year. The airline will also cease operations entirely in Kansas City, Missouri, and Newburgh, New York.
In a statement to CBS News, JetBlue mentioned that the removal of specific routes aims to decrease the likelihood of delays for its customers and will enable the company to allocate aircraft more efficiently, prioritizing its most profitable routes.
Limited aircraft availability, exacerbated by about a dozen grounded Airbus aircraft due to issues with their Pratt & Whitney engines undergoing inspection, is cited as a contributing factor to the route adjustments. Dave Jehn, JetBlue’s vice president of network planning and airline partnerships, emphasized in an internal memo seen by CBS News that these changes aim to optimize fleet deployment, minimize delays, and address constraints on aircraft availability.
Aside from withdrawing services from two U.S. cities, JetBlue will also discontinue operations in Bogotá, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; and Lima, Peru.
Jehn further underscored the necessity of streamlining the route network to enhance financial performance, emphasizing that each route must demonstrate its value to remain in the network.
JetBlue’s route adjustments come after the cancellation of its proposed acquisition of Spirit Airlines earlier this month, prompted by opposition from federal antitrust regulators. A federal judge’s ruling in January concluded that the merger would diminish competition by eliminating a significant discount airline, potentially leading to increased airfares for travelers.
