Munich Airport and Lufthansa have kicked off the 190th Oktoberfest by bringing Bavarian traditions, festive menus, and crews in traditional dress to the skies and terminals, offering millions of travelers a taste of Oktoberfest around the world.
LufthansaMunich Airport has officially launched Oktoberfest season with a festive kickoff, attended by Bavarian Minister Michaela Kaniber, Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa Hub Manager Heiko Reitz. Terminal 2 came alive with Bavarian flair as traditional costume groups and Lufthansa’s famous “Trachtencrew” performed, marking the start of the 190th Oktoberfest.
Over the 16-day festival, Munich Airport expects to welcome around 2.3 million passengers and handle more than 16,000 flights, a four percent increase compared to last year.
Tradition Takes Flight
Lufthansa continues its much-loved tradition of “Trachtenflüge” (traditional costume flights), with this year’s long-haul routes including Shanghai on September 20 and Seoul on September 29, alongside additional European and domestic flights. Crews in dirndls and lederhosen bring Bavarian charm onboard, serving passengers festive specialties in Business Class and lounges.
The airline has been operating Oktoberfest flights since 2006, reviving a custom dating back to 1957. Over the years, more than 30 destinations have been served by crews in traditional dress. In past seasons, Lufthansa has even gone as far as tapping beer kegs mid-flight, offering freshly poured draft beer at cruising altitude alongside Oktoberfest-inspired menus.
Festive Touches at the Airport
Munich Airport ensures the celebration begins as soon as travelers arrive. Guests in Terminal 2 are greeted with gingerbread hearts and roasted almonds, while live performances and Bavarian pop-up shops immerse passengers in regional culture. The airport’s Airbräu brewery is also central to the festivities, hosting weekend events and celebrating the 20th tapping of its special festival beer, “Gaudium.”
Culinary and Cultural Highlights
Lufthansa’s 2025 Oktoberfest offerings include hearty Bavarian classics such as roast chicken, mushroom ragout with pretzel dumplings, and Bavarian cream desserts. Lounges feature dishes like potato soup, roast pork, duck breast, steamed dumplings, and sweet specialties. To complement the food, a limited-edition “Avionic Wiesn Edition” cocktail—blending peach, citrus, herbs, and marigold—is also being served.
The uniforms for the Trachtencrew, designed by Munich costume specialist Angermaier, add authenticity while meeting sustainability standards. Men wear leather breeches and jackets, while women don dirndls in Lufthansa’s signature colors.
A Global Stage for Bavarian Culture
Now in its 19th year, Lufthansa’s modern Oktoberfest flight tradition has grown into a signature experience that blends regional pride with international reach. Together, Munich Airport and Lufthansa ensure that millions of travelers feel the Bavarian spirit—whether in the air, in the terminal, or at the festival grounds—making Oktoberfest not just a Munich event, but a global celebration.
