LufthansaThe Lufthansa Group is expanding its group-wide “OPS Sustainability” program to further improve fuel efficiency and make daily airline operations more environmentally responsible. Since 2022, more than 90 initiatives have already reduced fuel consumption by roughly 54,000 tonnes of kerosene, preventing around 170,000 tonnes of CO₂—equivalent to the emissions of 640 round trips between Munich and New York on an Airbus A350-900. The company now aims to cut an additional 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2028 through new digital tools and data-driven operational models, representing more than 15,200 tonnes of extra fuel savings each year.
“We integrate sustainability where it produces immediate results—within daily airline operations,” says Grazia Vittadini, Lufthansa Group Chief Technology Officer. “OPS Sustainability is already delivering measurable improvements, and at the same time we are investing heavily in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.”
Data-led enhancements to boost operational efficiency
The next phase of the program introduces new measures that rely on digital solutions and historical data to make fuel calculations more accurate. Additional steps such as optimized taxi and approach procedures, smarter water loading, and more precise flight planning will further reduce consumption. Sustainability principles are also being embedded throughout training programs for both flight crews and ground teams to encourage conscious, efficiency-focused decisions.
Innovations contribute as well—such as AeroSHARK, a sharkskin-inspired film developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF. Installed on over 20 Lufthansa Group aircraft, it reduces aerodynamic drag and cuts fuel burn and CO₂ emissions by about 1% on every flight.
About OPS Sustainability
Launched in 2022, the OPS Sustainability program targets efficiency improvements across key operational areas including cockpit, cabin, ground services, cargo, and technical operations. Cross-functional teams from across the Group collaborate to analyse data, identify inefficiencies, and implement effective solutions. This coordinated approach maximizes synergies and strengthens the Group’s overall performance in reducing fuel use.
Five pillars for greener aviation
Improving fuel efficiency complements the Lufthansa Group’s broader sustainability strategy, which also includes fleet renewal, increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), expanded options for customers to travel more sustainably, and greater intermodal connectivity. The Group has also contributed to global climate and weather research for over three decades.
