Discontinued Q Bag Tags are being replaced new luggage tags for frequent flyers.
QantasQantas will start issuing complimentary luggage tags to its frequent flyers next month, with the tags’ colors indicating a traveller’s status.
These new tags, which replace the iconic Q Bag Tags introduced in 2010, do not feature the RFID technology previously used to streamline the luggage check-in process. Qantas states that this technology is now redundant due to the implementation of app-based luggage tracking for both domestic and international flights.
The new tags are designed for carry-on bags, not checked luggage, although existing Q Bag Tags can still be used for domestic flight check-ins. Qantas notes that frequent flyers often used Q Bag Tags on their carry-on luggage to display their status. The new tags help Qantas staff recognize and reward their loyal members.
Each tag features an aluminum button, color-coded by status level—red for Bronze, silver for Silver, gold for Gold, a dusky color for Platinum, a more lustrous button for Platinum One, and black for Chairman’s Lounge members. The straps are made from recycled materials, with black straps for most members and caramel-colored straps for Platinum One and Chairman’s Lounge members. There’s also a space on the back for writing contact details.
Platinum One members will automatically receive their new tags soon. Members who reach or maintain Gold, Platinum, or Platinum One status will have the option of receiving a Qantas Luggage Tag or a ‘leaf’ to help them progress toward Green Tier status. Silver members will have a similar choice, while Bronze members can purchase a red tag for $20 or 3,480 Qantas Points.
Qantas has yet to confirm if lifetime status holders will automatically receive these new tags.
The previous Q Bag Tags, introduced in 2010, featured RFID chips for tracking checked luggage. However, the new app-based system now allows passengers to track their luggage through their smartphones, providing updates at various stages of the journey, although it does not offer real-time tracking like devices such as Apple’s AirTags.
