Tesco has appointed Matthew Barnes, the former CEO of Aldi, as its new Chief Executive for the UK, following Jason Tarry’s decision to step down from the company after 33 years. Tarry, who has led Tesco for the past six years, will depart from the company in March 2024. He is recognized for guiding Tesco through a successful turnaround and enhancing the supermarket’s competitiveness in the UK market, particularly during the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Barnes, who will assume the role after Tarry, has held significant leadership positions at Aldi, including CEO for the UK and Ireland. Later, he was promoted to Aldi Sud’s executive board, where he oversaw various international businesses and global sourcing, purchasing, and supply chain operations for the discount retailer.

Ken Murphy, the CEO of the Tesco Group, expressed his appreciation for Jason’s substantial contributions to the company. He noted that under Tarry’s leadership, Tesco has reached its highest level of competitiveness and has a strong foundation built on a commitment to serving customers and supporting a diverse and high-performing corporate culture.

Tarry also shared his sentiments, acknowledging the incredible journey he has had with Tesco over the past 33 years. He stated that the decision to leave was not taken lightly but believes it’s the right time for him to move on. He expressed gratitude for his dedicated colleagues and the lasting friendships he has formed during his tenure. Tarry committed to continuing to serve as UK CEO until March, emphasizing his determination to ensure customers have the best possible Christmas shopping experience, particularly in his final year as a Tesco colleague.
