UberUber and Thames Clippers have officially renewed their innovative partnership, committing to extend the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service through 2030. This renewed agreement reinforces the River Thames as one of London’s fastest-growing and most dynamic transport corridors, transforming how residents and visitors move through the capital.
A Transformative Collaboration in Urban Mobility
Originally launched in July 2020, the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service rebranded London’s existing River Bus network and made it bookable through the Uber app—integrating river travel into the city’s broader multi-modal transport system. Since its debut, it has rapidly gained popularity, attracting commuters looking to avoid road congestion, tourists seeking scenic routes, and locals enjoying leisure travel along the river.
“For over 20 years, we’ve championed the Thames as London’s most scenic artery,” said Sean Collins, CEO and Co-Founder of Thames Clippers. “Our partnership with Uber has been transformational—unlocking new audiences, accelerating growth, and enhancing our brand visibility.”
A Future-Focused Partnership
The partnership goes beyond branding. With the agreement extended until 2030, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers will continue to operate with Uber co-branding across all vessels and piers, while pushing forward on innovation and sustainability.
In line with London’s environmental goals, Thames Clippers has already introduced groundbreaking vessels:
-
September 2023: The Earth Clipper, Mars Clipper, and Celestial Clipper—the UK’s first hybrid-electric commuter boats—entered service.
-
December 2023: The Orbit Clipper, the nation’s first fully electric cross-river ferry, was unveiled and is now preparing for active deployment.
-
May 2024: The operator secured new investment to support fleet expansion and decarbonisation, aiming to meet rising passenger demand while reducing emissions.
These developments align with Mayor Sadiq Khan’s environmental strategy and Transport for London’s push toward a greener, more connected transport network.
Cultural Experiences and Celebrity Moments on the Water
Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has become more than a means of transport—it’s also a floating venue for cultural and social experiences. From Pride-themed drag performances to Valentine’s Day serenades by the English National Opera, the service has creatively brought London’s cultural scene to the water.
Notable guests have included HRH King Charles and global music icon Usher, who hosted a star-studded party aboard one of the vessels—highlighting the river service’s rising profile in London’s social life.
“Uber Boat by Thames Clippers brings our travel vision to life,” said Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK. “It offers a seamless, sustainable, and fun way to navigate the city—and it’s a uniquely London experience.”
Part of Uber’s Multi-Modal Mission
This partnership is central to Uber’s long-term multi-modal strategy, which aims to integrate all forms of transport—from rideshares and e-bikes to trains, flights, and boats—into a single app. With the Thames now playing a key role, Uber is helping to reimagine how people move around London, combining convenience, sustainability, and experience.
Key Milestones in the Partnership
-
July 2020: Uber announces partnership with Thames Clippers; bookings via Uber app begin.
-
August 2020: First Uber Boat officially sets sail on the River Thames.
-
September 2022: Investment firm Northleaf Capital Partners acquires a majority stake in Thames Clippers to fund growth and innovation.
-
2023–2024: Introduction of hybrid and electric vessels, with plans underway to further decarbonise and expand the fleet.
Looking Ahead
As river travel continues to boom and London seeks more sustainable and integrated transport options, the extended Uber–Thames Clippers partnership stands as a model for how public-private innovation can reshape urban mobility.
With further fleet electrification, enhanced digital integration, and broader cultural programming on the horizon, the Thames is set to play an even greater role in how Londoners and visitors experience the capital—by boat.
